TV Talk: Binge-Worthy Box Sets

With the world in lockdown, it’s only natural for people to use the time catching up on some box sets that have long been on their watchlist. However, if you’re looking for something new to indulge in, here are some TV shows that are so addictive you’ll fly through them.

Peaky Blinders

Let’s start with the single most compelling show in the world, Peaky Blinders. In 5 series we have seen the Shelby family rise to the top of society, and face some serious adversity along the way. Led by Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby, the Peaky Blinders are a force to be reckoned with. This is a world that is dominated by gang wars, illegal activities, and a lot of violence, but the real reason this show has amassed such a loyal following is due to its intellect. The Peaky Blinders is driven by the careful and calculated manipulation of rivalries and politics. It’s all about strategy, and Tommy Shelby always has an ace up his sleeve.

TV Talk: Of Strangers, Vikings, and Psychological Warfare.

It’s official, the world has gone mad. It seems like our lives are revolving around this latest crisis, but we’re not here to talk about that. Instead, this post is spotlighting some of the most addictive shows you can and should binge. The quality of our TV shows is on a whole new level of epic, and if you’ve not already seen these shows, then I suggest you add them to your watchlist immediately.

Vikings (Season 6A)

In their final season, Vikings continue to build up towards an explosive end for the sons of Ragnar. With some shocking development and plenty of continuous tension, Vikings are laying the groundworks for a most fitting end to our beloved Vikings. This season, more than any other highlights the way Ragnar’s four sons embody the spirit of their father. Previous seasons have struggled with bringing them out of Ragnar’s shadow, but season 6 successfully establishes the sons as leaders in their own right. This is clearly evident in Bjorn’s struggle to understand and implement his own ideas of kingship, while Ivar, Ubbe, and Hvitserk undertake their own journeys. Continue reading

Midnight Movies: An Adam Driver Special

Adam Driver has easily become one of the most prolific actors of our time, displaying his range as an actor in every role he takes. He’s one of those performers that instantly captivates audiences with his nuanced performances, turning one-dimensional characters into complex and compelling individuals. Here is a small selection of films that demonstrate just how versatile of an actor Adam Driver is.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

And so we come to the end of the Skywalker saga. The final trilogy of this saga has not been as smooth sailing as they’d like, with The Last Jedi facing the scorn of fans and The Rise of Skywalker causing further divisions. However, if there is anything that we can take away from this sequel trilogy it’s the way it celebrates the legacy of this epic sci-fi saga. Continue reading

TV Talk: Swamp Thing

Created by: Gary Dauberman, Mark Verheiden
Starring: Crystal Reed, Andy Bean, Virginia Madsen
IMDb Rating: 7.8/10
Synopsis
Abby Arcane returns home to Marais, Louisiana to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus, only to discover the dark, terrifying mysteries of the swamp.

Swamp Thing has had an interesting journey so far. The show was a highly anticipated adaptation of one of the more unconventional heroes. However, rumours of trouble were already making waves after it was announced that production was shut down early, turning a planned 13 episode series into a shortened 10 episodes. Nevertheless, initial reviews for the show highlighted its potential, but then, after the first episode, DC pulls the rug from under and cancelled the show. It was a shocking move and one that brought about a lot of confusion and speculation. It also makes the viewers think twice about committing to a show that has no future. Nevertheless, there was something about this show that dragged me in, and the results were surprising, in the best possible way.

TV Talk: High Stakes Fantasy, Cliche Period Drama, and the Most Wholesome TV Event.

Brace yourselves, this is a long one. From fantasy dramas, cliche period dramas, international sporting events, and the most wholesome show on Earth, the last couple of month have provided some highly engaging TV. Here is what I’ve been watching.

Carnival Row (Series 1)

A neo-noir fantasy series on Amazon Prime that explores a city on the brink of collapse as tensions between the citizens and the mythical creatures seeking refuge in the city threaten to boil amidst a string of unsolved murders. It’s a tale that finds our central characters, former lovers Philo (Orlando Bloom) and Vignette (Cara Delevigne) work together to uncover the conspiracy behind these murders and confront the past that tore them apart. The mythology of this show is visually stunning and incredibly fascinating, and several aspects of the show seem to be laying the groundwork for the next season. However, their titular focus remained on our war-torn lovers. While certain aspects of their relationship are credible, there still seems to be a spark missing between them to make you really invest in their relationship. I’m hoping the next season will explore the political mechanisms while continuing to expand on the mythology of these creatures and their world. Continue reading

Most Anticipated TV Shows

So far, 2019 has delivered some incredible TV hits. My most anticipated for the start of the year was Titans and The Umbrella Academy and they did not disappoint. With the popularity of streaming services at an all-time high, it seems we have more choices than ever in TV and film. This list comprises of TV shows that are set to be released and will undoubtedly have me glueded to the edge of my seat from start to finish.

1. The Witcher

Beyond the fact that it’s a fantasy, I don’t know much about this series beyond the fact that it’s based on the book and had a pretty popular video game. Everyone knows that I love a good fantasy and that’s why I’m keeping an eye on this one. I can’t comment much on the Henry Cavill character reveal teaser, but I do hope that they sort out the wig because it did not look good. Other than that, I think we’ll just have to sit back and wait to see what this show has to offer.  Continue reading
