Most Anticipated Movies of 2020

2020 is shaping up to be a blockbuster of year for movies, and for some of these films, expectations are already sky-high. This list will spotlight some of the most anticipated movies of 2020, and while these blockbusters will see fans flocking to the cinema, be sure to keep an eye out for those smaller films that have the potential to move viewers.

1917

A hot contender for this years Oscars, 1917 looks like a tense war film that spotlights the struggles of two young soldiers tasked with the responsibility of hand-delivering a message to another Battalion that could save thousands of lives. With the high stakes, mounting tension, and stellar cast performance, I have no doubt that this film will be a cinematic masterpiece.

Wonder Woman 1984

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I think DC’s line up of films in 2020 is a lot more interesting than Marvel. Wonder Woman was a breath of fresh air to the struggling DC Extended Universe and Gal Gadot’s portrayal of this iconic character showcase’s Diana’s heroic qualities whilst retaining her humanity. 1984 has a lot of interesting concepts. To start, I’m curious to see how they incorporate the reintroduction of Steve Trevor, but the 80’s setting can also be a lot of fun.

Mulan

Disney’s live-action remakes are getting old. That is a fact. Beauty and the Beast were stunning, but that does not mean we need a live-action remake of every classic, especially when they don’t offer anything new to their often superior animated counterparts. However, there is some lingering intrigue about Mulan and it will be interesting to see how they balance out the feature of the animated film with the features from the legendary Chinese ballad.

Black Widow

If this film had come 5 years ago, I would be a lot more excited, but since we know how Black Widows arc ends, the anticipation for this film waned. Nevertheless, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has its claws in every fan and there is a lot of potential in exploring Black Widow’s history. We know her story, but this film provides an opportunity to see Natasha Romanov come face to face with her past in what will surely be an action-packed showstopper.

Birds of Prey (And the Fabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn)

Despite being bitter about the omission of Barbara Gordon aka the founder of the Birds of Prey, this film does look like a lot of fun. We all know that this is in actuality Harley Quinn film with the Birds of Prey being her backing, but I’m sure this will be a fun and outrageous production.

A Quiet Place II

The sequel everyone has been waiting for, A Quiet Place II will surely up the ante of the first film. With the addition of Peaky Blinders star, Cillian Murphy, you can almost guarantee that A Quiet Place II will raise the stakes even higher and provide a stellar cast performance.

Tenet

There’s always an air of intrigue surrounding a Christopher Nolan film and Tenet is no different. It looks to be an exhilarating thriller, but there’s also guaranteed to have a couple of unpredictable twists that will make viewers turn their heads.

Bill & Ted Face the Music

This will either be an epic disaster or a showstopping feature. As a fan of the first film, I loved the seemingly random and bizarre concept of a younger Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter needing to pass their history paper to ensure that their band and future stay together as their music is destined to create a future utopian society. Face the Music will spotlight Bill and Ted as parents who have yet to create the music to save this world. Hopefully, this instalment of Bill and Ted will be as entertaining and brilliant as the first one.

Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise will always be the action man of Hollywood, and after 30 years we are finally treated to a Top Gun sequel. Hopefully, Top Gun: Maverick will capture the spirit of the original as we immerse ourself back into the life of LT Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Eternals

With its all-star star cast, who wouldn’t be excited about this film? The Black Widow prequel will kick off phase four of the MCU but it’s Eternals that will introduce the world to the post-Endgame era of the Marvel. The introduction of the Eternals will surely add another layer to this universe as we explore the lives and conflicts of this immortal race.

  1. I started making a similar list but there were so many movies!!
2020 seems to be a great year for DC, I agree! I am a bit afraid for Birds of Prey but I am way more optimistic than in the past. I agree what you say about Barbara Gordon. And yes to your comments on Black Widow! I love her but I don’t think now’s the time for her movie. Maybe they did it so that Yelena or someone else can take on the mantle of BW.
I have not been the biggest fan of Disney’s live action remakes, and I was hesitant about Mulan because it’s one of my favourite movies from Disney and they changed so many things but maybe that is a good thing too because Disney deviated a lot from its original tale.
I have not seen A Quiet Place since it’s not a genre I typically enjoy but I’m thinking about giving it a try nonetheless.
You had some amazing movies listed and I hope you get to all of them this year and love them as much as you hope to do!

    1. I think DC have found their footing now that they’re not trying to follow Marvel’s formula anymore. There’s a lot of potential in the DC Extended Universe, so hopefully, they can give their heroes the story they deserve.

What irks me the most about the live-action remakes is how unoriginal they are. They’re using nostalgia as their biggest marketing ploy, yet the animated versions are still better. I hope Mulan gives us a film that breaks this formula.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen A Quiet Place, but as a story, it is quite compelling.

      1. I have not watched most of the DCEU movies (I am doing a challenge to do so this year) but from the trailers and reactions, it seems like you’re right.

YES! Lion King was extremely disappointing and it’s annoying. I was a bit mad they were changing so much about Mulan but it actually looks incredible and different so it’s exciting.
