Most Anticipated Films of the Summer

It is hard to keep track of all the incredible films released every year. From the superhero showdowns to the feel-good films and the impactful understated gems, there is something for everyone. Earlier in the year, I spotlighted my most anticipated films of the year so the films featured in that post will not be featured here. This is but a small selection of films set to be released this summer and can definitely see having a heavy influence at the box office.

1. Yesterday

Have you ever considered what the world would be like if we suddenly woke up one day and forgot that the Beatles ever existed? Yesterday will provide the answer to that question in what is shaping up to be one the highlights of the summers movie line up. With the world forgetting the songs of one of the most renowned bands in the world, it will be up to Jack, a struggling singer-songwriter to bring back the songs that are embedded in history. The question is, how far is he willing to go to achieve his dream, and what does he risk loosing along the way.

2. Spider-Man: Far From Home

Now that we’ve reached the endgame, Far From Home is like the epilogue to the Infinity Saga. It’s a smart move to have the next film follow Peter Parker as the fallout of Endgame will undoubtedly be felt. The trailer doesn’t give too much away, but it looks like it could set up some future villains for the MCU whilst testing Peter’s limits. Jake Gyllenhaal’s role remains unclear, but there is sure to be plenty of twists and turns to keep fans at the edge of their seats.

3. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

For those of you that fancy a bit of old school Hollywood, this is the film for you. With a stellar cast led by Brad Pitt and Leonardo Dicaprio, this film feels like a total celebration of those classic, old school films that paved the way for modern cinema in what could become an instant classic of its own.

4. Toy Story 4

There’s a reason to be skeptical about Toy Story 4. In the eyes of many, Toy Story 3 was a beautiful conclusion to the franchise. Toy Story 4 could be a hit or miss as it sees Woody and the gang’s latest adventure make them question their own purpose. There’s also the reintroduction of Bo Peep, and she looks to be the character that might introduce a new conflict for Woody and the gang.

5. Men In Black: International

Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth have already proved they have good chemistry in Thor: Ragnarok and this alien chasing buddy cop action drama are perfectly suited for both of them. Fans will naturally be ready to compare it to the original Men In Black franchise, which is why exploring the International bases makes for a smart move as it allows this film to stand apart from the original whilst also reintroducing us to the Men In Black universe. This film is guaranteed to be a fun and action-packed sci-fi comedy.

6. Aladdin

Personally, Lion King is the one to watch out for in terms of live-action adaptations, but since that was featured in my Most Anticipated Films list, I thought I’d spotlight Aladdin. This can go either way, and Will Smith definitely has big shoes to fill as the genie, but if anyone was suited for this character it’s him. He has the capability of capturing the charm and wit of the genie. Based on the trailers, Aladdin looks to be a vibrant adaptation, and one can only hope that it lives up the hype.

7. Rocketman

Biopics seem to be the latest trend in this industry, and as the tagline says, the only way to tell his story is to live his fantasy. It is clear that Taron Egerton fully embraced this opportunity to portray Elton John in all his highs and lows, so it will definitely be interesting to see if this latest musical biopic can reach the heights of their inspiration.

  1. ROCKETMAN! I’m stupid excited for that film. Not only do I love Taron Egerton as an actor, but I also agree that he’s going to do a great job!

Toy Story 4 I’m nervous about. i felt like the story ended well in Toy Story 3 … and I’m a huge Toy Story fan … especially since my age matched Andy’s throughout the 3 films, so it made it feel like it was a movie for us peeps … we shall see.

I’m excited to see Spider-Man: Far From Home … but I know I will cry … damn Tom Holland’s good acting!

Oooo … Once Upon a Time in Hollywood seems interesting … I’m also biased because Leo will be in it ❤

Hmmm … I'm also excited for Pokémon Detective Pikachu, X-Men: Dark Phoenix, and Tolkien !

    Great list!

    1. Taron Egerton is such an incredible and versatile actor. I think he’ll shine in this film.

I am with you about Toy Story. I was perfectly content to end it with 3, but then I heard Keanu Reeves was in the 4th and that won me over a bit haha.

Tom Holland is such an incredible actor. His scenes in Endgame reduced me to tears. I can’t wait to see how Far From Home deals with the fallout, especially since it appears that his entire class was eradicated in the snap haha.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood just looks like so much fun.

Dark Phoenix and Detective Pikachu are another one of my most anticipated. I just hope they do justice to the Dark Phoenix storyline. I’m curious about Tolkien, but am not desperate to see it either.

      1. Oh, me too!

KEANU REEVES! I love him so much!! He’s such a great actor but he’s also a beautiful and generous human being! He apparently even takes less money sometimes in films to help with production — I want a Keanu Reeves in my life!

Tom Holland’s scenes in Infinity War made me cry … End Game RUINED ME!!! I even teared up in Homecoming!!! Damn you, Tom Holland!! And yeah … I can’t wait to see what they discuss.

Oh gosh … if they mess up Dark Phoenix … I’M GOING TO LOSE IT!!!!!

        1. Keanu is the ultimate sweetheart. He has always been a favourite, but I feel like 2019 is literally his resurgence. I’m just so excited that Bill and Ted 3 has finally been confirmed!

Tom Holland has no right in making me cry, I’m so excited for Far From Home.

They’ve already butchered the Dark Phoenix storyline once, they cannot do it again, especially when you have Sophie Turner as Jean/The Phoenix cause she has made such a good mark on the character so far.

          1. OH MY GOSH, ME TOO!! So excited for those!!

Ugh … Tom Holland … too good of an actor … so rude lol!

I know, which is why I’m nervous. I have to say though, I have enjoyed all the newer X-Men films. So maybe this will actually be good ha-ha! Sophie Turner is a wonderful actress, so I also have high hopes 😀

    1. It’ll be so interesting to see how Far From Home looks at the fallout of Endgame. I also can’t wait to see Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal share the screen together.

  2. I am sooooo excited for Rocketman! I really hope they keep bringing more musical biopics, because I absolutely love them. I don’t know a lot about Elton John, so I’m looking forward to learning more about the up’s & down’s of his career through this one. I was a bit skeptical about the casting choice, not gonna lie, but I guess this may be the moment in which Taron Egerton will have his redemptions for me and I’ll start liking him as much as everyone else does, hahah.
I’m super excited for Aladdin too! It’s one of my favorite Disney movies and I have very high expectations for this live-action. I don’t understand all the bad comments it has gotten already, because truly the movie isn’t even out yet! People just need to chill and watch it before backlashing it, lol.

    1. I am all for this musical biopic trend, especially when they get the casting right and you have an actor that literally throws themselves into the role and captures the spirit of the musician they’re playing. Hopefully, Taron has his time to shine and he redeems himself for you.

I always reserve my judgements until I actually see the film. People are way too quick to judge, especially in regards to Will Smith as the genie. No one is going to be able to match Robin Williams, but as far as charisma and slightly mischievous genie, Will Smith is actually a fitting choice.
