This week I am waiting on
Aurora Rising (The Aurora Cycle, #1) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
Publication Date: May 7th, 2019
Goodreads Summary
The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the Academy would touch…
A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass techwiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering.
And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem—that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline-cases, and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.
They’re not the heroes we deserve. They’re just the ones we could find. Nobody panic.
Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman hit every mark with the Illuminae Files series. The series was original in its execution and had us reeling with every twist and turn the books threw at us. The Illuminae Files set the bar high for this epic collaboration, and expectations will undoubtedly soar for Aurora Rising. The concept of this book sounds like a classic sci-fi epic and I cannot wait to see the adventures and trouble this band of misfits get up to.
What’s your most anticipated book?
I’m so excited for this too!

The synopsis is so endearingly familiar. I’m having Six of Crows vibes here.

I can see the parallels, but I have no doubt that Kaufman and Kristoff will put a new spin on this setup.

They picked a great cover for this one! I need to finish their first series, but I’m keeping this one in mind now.

The conclusion to the Illuminae Files was impressive and stressful at the same time, but so satisfying.

I’m super excited for Aurora Rising as well! Even though I’m not a big sci-fi person and never read The Illuminae Files. There’s something about the band-of-misfits-have-to-save-the-world trope that always gets me. (Plus, that cover!)

I love any book that has a band of misfits that save the day. There are so many amazing dynamics that can be explored within that sort of group.
