This week I am waiting on
On the Come Up be Angie Thomas
Publication Date: February 5th, 2019
Goodreads Summary
Sixteen-year-old Bri wants to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. Or at least make it out of her neighborhood one day. As the daughter of an underground rap legend who died before he hit big, Bri’s got big shoes to fill. But now that her mom has unexpectedly lost her job, food banks and shutoff notices are as much a part of Bri’s life as beats and rhymes. With bills piling up and homelessness staring her family down, Bri no longer just wants to make it—she has to make it.
On the Come Up is Angie Thomas’s homage to hip-hop, the art that sparked her passion for storytelling and continues to inspire her to this day. It is the story of fighting for your dreams, even as the odds are stacked against you; of the struggle to become who you are and not who everyone expects you to be, and of the desperate realities of poor and working-class black families.
Angie Thomas’ ‘The Hate U Give’ took the world by storm this past year, so naturally, her upcoming release has got to be one of the most anticipated books for next year. On the Come Up sounds like a brilliant coming of age story that explores the trials and tribulations of a young girl who fights for what she wants, even when the world seems to be fighting against her. It is very hard to not be excited about this book.
What’s your most anticipated book?
YES!! I need this one so badly. It’s going to be amazing. And I love that different cover too!

I didn’t even see the other cover until after this post, but both look just as amazing as I’m sure the story will be.

I still need to read The Hate U Give, but with my slumpy year that probably won’t happen until the new year. Hopefully, by then, I’ll be able to read both of them.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a book that’s had such a strong emphasis on hip-hop before. It sounds really interesting.
