Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme, created by Jill at Breaking The Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re eagerly anticipating.
This week I am waiting on
King of Scars (Nikolai Duology, #1) by Leigh Bardugo
Publication Date: January 29th, 2019
Goodreads Summary
Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in his country’s bloody civil war—and he intends to keep it that way. Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, the young king must find a way to refill Ravka’s coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army.
Yet with every day, a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. But some secrets aren’t meant to stay buried—and some wounds aren’t meant to heal.
I’ve not read the Grisha trilogy, but whenever I ask someone about that series they say that Nikolai is the standout. I remember his cameo in Crooked Kingdom and I’m excited to learn more about his character. I figured Nina would get a POV in this duology as well because I figured her story wasn’t completely over and I think she, out of everyone, needs some sort of closure.
Have you read the Grisha trilogy?

I totally agree! Although I still haven’t read her Wonderwoman novel yet, and I’m kind of surprised at myself!

I figured there’d be more books in the Grishaverse, I just didn’t expect Nikolai to get one.

And I gravitate towards the ones with half naked men on the front… LOL. I guess you could call those pretty! 😉

I cannot wait for this book!!! You really NEED to read the Grisha trilogy. Not only is it really, really good but Nikolai is funny, witty and seriously steals each scene that he’s in.

The Grisha trilogy sounds interesting enough, but it’s not a priority read. I’d mostly read it just for Nikolai haha.

After reading the Grisha trilogy a while back, I’m so excited to read Nikolai’s story, especially with the events that happened to him. I would definitely recommend reading the Grisha trilogy first because I think there’s going to be quite a bit that will add to Nikolai’s story in King of Scars. Lovely post! 🙂

This might just be a case where I’ll read King of Scars, want more of Nikolai and proceed to reading the Grisha trilogy haha.
