Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.

This weeks topic is all about the hits. Specifically the topics that will make me want to read the book. We all have our go-to topics and tropes so here are the ten topics that’ll make me want to read the book.

1. Road Trip:

An automatic plus for me. These road trip based books just fuel my wanderlust. Not only do you get to explore an abundance of different settings, there’s also a sense of intimacy to road trips. It’s like you’re a fly on the wall and these characters are in such close proximity to each other for the duration of the trip which makes it a perfect setting for people to get to know each other and possibly develop a relationship.

2. Sports:

These books are addictive as hell. Most of the sports contemporary novels I’ve read have been New Adult books but they are hilarious, sexy and really makes you appreciate sports a lot more. As much as I love the romance in these sports based books, the highlight for me is when we get to explore the influence of sports on our characters and their community.

3. Historic Setting / Alternative History

I’ve only read a handful of historic novels but all of them have been a hit. In school, we’re given the facts about certain topics.. What historic fiction does is take those events and the facts and bring the emotion out of it. Similarly with alternative history books, they take the what ifs and make them a fictional reality which is a terrifying concept in itself but so fascinating.

4. Magic

This is a very broad topic but magic, specifically elemental magic always catches my eye. Magic transports you to worlds where the impossible becomes possible. However, I also love exploring the limitations of magic and its consequences.

5. Assassins:

This is a very popular trend right now and I love it. Why? Because I have this morbid fascination with characters that take the lives of others into their own hands. It’s all kinds of morally complex.

6. Retellings:

I’ve not read much of these but again it’s another topic that hasn’t let me down yet. What I love about retellings is that they take these iconic moments and characteristics from the tales but still manage to retain their own sense of individuality and in some cases introduce you to a new fairy tale.

7. Military

I’m a sucker for a military man. There’s a lot that be explored when dealing with the military and it really makes you appreciate everything they have to endure for the sake of our safety. This topic is very much character driven for me because exploring the affects of war on people is heartbreaking but also enlightening.

8. Morally Ambiguous:

Morally ambiguous characters are my kind of characters. I love exploring the complexities of human nature. When you have characters that tread on the line between what we deem as right and wrong it, the tension is intensified because they’re so unpredictable but also it makes you question our own moral compass.

9. Slow burn romance

I don’t need a romance to be at the forefront of every book I read but I do love a slow burn romance. One that takes it’s time to develop over the course of the book/series. There’s something so natural about these romances and it allows our characters to really get to know one another. The stakes are usually high in fantasy books and even if there’s an instant attraction sometimes the circumstances doesn’t permit them to act on it which just heightens the emotion.

10. Adventure:

It’s why I read. I love it when a book takes me on this wonderful adventure. I can lose myself in these adventures and at times explore the impossible. Who doesn’t want to go on an adventure?
