Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.
‘Tis the season guys. My favourite time of year has arrived and I am so excited for this years festivities. Naturally I’ll be looking to stock up on my books for this holiday and if you know anyone that is a fan of the Young Adult genre, here are 10 books I’d recommend as gifts for the YA lover in your life.
1. The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson: One of my go-to contemporary authors. Matson does a great job at capturing the voice of these characters and their struggles. Her books have a lot of heart.
2. Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta: No one captures a teenage voice quite like Melina Marchetta. Her characters are incredibly relateable because I can connect to them on a personal level because their reactions and emotions match those of any teenager. Saving Francesca also looks at the lingering affects of depression on a family.
3. The Hard Count by Ginger Scott: For those sport contemporary fans, I highly recommend The Hard Count. This book packed a few punches and looks at that sports dominated community. It also provides some insights into how sport can tear people apart just as easily as it can bring people together.
4. The Weight of Feathers by Anna-Marie McLemore: Fancy something a bit more atmospheric. This is the book for you? The Weight of Feathers has a Romeo and Juliet quality to it with a sprinkle of magic added to the mix. It’s a lovely story about how two outcasts of rivaling families find strength in themselves and in each other.
5. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo: A must have for any YA fan. The characters are as brutal as the world, the dynamics between them are intense, the complexities of these characters are phenomenal and your shippers heart will go into overdrive.
6. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff: The narrative method for this book is incredibly unique but that does not make the characters any less compelling. The combination of these two factors makes this book and exciting sci-fi adventure.
7. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer: For fans of fairy-tale retellings, look no further than the Lunar Chronicles. These books capture the essence of the fairy-tales we love but also retains its own individuality.
8. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater: A hunt for a dead-Welsh king and an incredible story of friendship. Blue and her Raven Boys are a fascinating cast of characters and the support they provide one another is heartwarming.
9. My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick: Another contemporary go-to. This book is a summer essential for YA fans. With a beautifully developed romance and a lot of heart, My Life Next Door is a must have.
10. All the Truth That’s in Me by Julie Berry: A highly underrated book but one worth reading. The beauty is in the simplicity of this book as we follow Judith’s life after returning to her community mutilated and ostracized. This book is a story of strengths as Judith finds her voice and unravels the questions that continue to haunt her.
Those are the books I’d recommend as gifts for the YA lover in your life.
