Top Ten Tuesday: Contemporary Recommendations

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.

This weeks topic is to select books to read if your in the mood for certain genre. Admittedly I talk more about my fantasy books than I do the contemporary ones so I figured that I could use this weeks topic to highlight some of my favourite contemporaries.

1. I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson: Art, family, loss, love, forgiveness. This book packs a punch in every single way. I love the focus on the relationship between the twins, Jude and Noah. This book definitely brings out some intense emotions. 

2. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta: An obvious choice. I cried my little heart out to this book. Each character faces some challenges and the way they come together and unravel the mystery that’s plagued them for so long is beautifully crafted. 

3. Night Owls by Jenn Bennett: This book made me want to hop on a plane to San Francisco. Night Owls is the perfect example of a healthy relationship. Bex and Jack are very honest with one another; communication was not an issue between them. 

4. Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson: This book unleashed my sense of adventure and I desperately wanted to go on a road trip after finishing it. However, while there is a sweet romance in the book it does not take center stage. This book is all about letting go and I loved Amy’s character development.

5. Something Real by Heather Demetrios: I figured I talk about I’ll Meet You There all the time so why not highlight Something Real instead. This book shows us the dark side of reality television. Here you have a young girl who’s whole identity has been crafted out for the benefit of her families reality show, never being given an opportunity to craft out her own identity. My heart went out to Chloe in this book

6. My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick: I’m so predictable. My summer go-to book. I must admit Jase is my favourite character in this book. He’s so supportive Sam and he’s also honest and patient with her. We need more genuine good guys like Jase in books.

7. Boomerang by Noelle August: Tired of the same old angst ridden NA books? Me too. That is why Boomerang is my recommended NA contemporary. This book is hilarious, angst free and so cute.

8. Emmy & Oliver by Robin Benway: I’m a sucker for childhood sweethearts. I feel like this book is very understated but it carries a lot of heart and explores the effect a traumatic incident has on not just those directly involve but on the entire community. 

9. Everything, Everything  by Nicola Yoon: In the mood for a quick read? This is the book for you. It also has a diverse cast of characters and explores an very rare disease.

10. Burning Blue by Paul Griffin: I love the mystery in this book. I’m usually pretty good at guessing the culprit but this one floored me and when I thought back to the little hints scattered around the book I wondered how I could have missed it.

  4. It seems like there are so many YA contemps right now and that’s a good thing. I do want to read more of them (I tried a few last year and they were good) and your list looks great. I’ve seen good reviews of several of these.

    1. I’m always on the look out for a good contemporary. I find that they are the prefect go-to after reading an intense fantasy. These books are a combination of emotional reads and the light/fluffy easy reads you need every now and then haha.

  5. I adored Everything, Everything!! I thought it was a great story and I loved the format. Definitely made for a fast read. Have you read Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda? I just read it a few weeks ago and I LOVED it! Emmy & Oliver sounds really good too! On to the TBR it goes 🙂

    1. I smile every time I think about Everything,Everything. It was such an easy read for me. I’ve heard nothing but glowing reviews about Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda and I am desperately waiting to get my hands on a copy. I hope you enjoy Emmy & Oliver if you get round to reading it. 😀

  6. I may have to start looking towards you to get contemporary recommendations, because I don’t often like them, but two of my favorites are on your list: I’ll Give You the Sun and Jellicoe Road. So heartbreakingly beautiful, both of them. 🙂

    1. Emmy & Oliver is such a cute read and has a lot of heart. Plus the parents actually have a prominent role in their children’s lives. YAY! I hope you enjoy it when you get round to read it. 😀
