Risuko (Season of the Sword #1) by David Kudler

Publication Date: June 15th 2016

Goodreads Summary
My name is Kano Murasaki, but most people call me Risuko. Squirrel.

I am from Serenity Province, though I was not born there.

My nation has been at war for a hundred years, Serenity is under attack, my family is in disgrace, but some people think that I can bring victory. That I can be a very special kind of woman.

All I want to do is climb.

My name is Kano Murasaki, but everyone calls me Squirrel.

Risuko.

Though Japan has been devastated by a century of civil war, Risuko just wants to climb trees. Growing up far from the battlefields and court intrigues, the fatherless girl finds herself pulled into a plot that may reunite Japan — or may destroy it. She is torn from her home and what is left of her family, but finds new friends at a school that may not be what it seems.

Magical but historical, Risuko follows her along the first dangerous steps to discovering who she truly is.

Kano Murasaki, called Risuko (Squirrel) is a young, fatherless girl, more comfortable climbing trees than down on the ground. Yet she finds herself enmeshed in a game where the board is the whole nation of Japan, where the pieces are armies, moved by scheming lords, and a single girl couldn’t possibly have the power to change the outcome. Or could she?

Historical and magical. What more could you possibly want. Oh yes, it also takes place in Japan, a country full of history and culture. I always love exploring a different landscape in books and this one sounds right up my alley. Plus, how gorgeous is that cover?

What’s your most anticipated?

  1. Oh my gosh, I love the sound of this one! I love reading about Asian characters or seeing ethnic diversity in books. I hope it’s executed well and that we get to learn some more about Japan! I’m adding this to my TBR immediately. Thanks for sharing this, Lois! 😀

    1. Oh no, I just checked on Netgalley and it’s available to be read. I’m not really supposed to be requesting books… but I think I will with this one since it seems like right up my alley. Just wanted to let you know it’s averrable on there if you want to read it before it comes out! ^.^

      1. Thank you for that info. I will definitely check that out (if I can remember my Netgalley details haha). I have high hopes for this book and I am so excited to see how Japanese culture is explored. 😀
