Top Ten Tuesday: Best Books Read in 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and Bookish where we get a new topic for a top 10 list.

This weeks topic is to look back at all the books I read in 2015 and figure out which books made it to my best of the best list. A lot of these new favourite books were released this year. However, you will notice that I have one or two older books that just couldn’t be ignored. In no particular order these are the best books I read in 2015.

1. I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demetrios: As far as contemporaries go this book is in the top 3 favourites. The characters are so wonderfully flawed and the relationship dynamics are so beautifully crafted. 

2. A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab: Most of you know by now that my summer was basically a Schwab binge fest. Out of all of her books,  A Darker Shade of Magic was my favourite. The characters are all morally ambiguous and the world building in intricate without being over complicated. 

3. I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson: My heart was ready to burst after reading this book. It was emotionally grueling. The dynamic between twins, Noah and Jude, is at the heart of the story and to see how these two come together after falling apart was just so heartwarming. 

4. Six of Crows by Leigh Bradugo: You all knew this list wouldn’t be complete without this book. It’s impossible to not love these characters. The world they live in so harsh and brutal you just want to take them away and stuff them in this protective bubble. 

5. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff: How predictable am I? This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and it did not disappoint. It’s creative and unpredictable. I loved it.

6. Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon: This book is ideal if you’re in a reading slump or just looking for a quick read. I loved the issues that were explored and the diversity among the characters. 

7. End of Days by Susan Ee: I was nervous about this book because being told that a previously 6 book series was now a trilogy had me wondering how all the loose ends would be tied up. Once again I had nothing to worry about. This series is everything I want in an angel invasion apocalypse story.

8. Winter by Marissa Meyer: This is how you finish a series. I loved everything about this book. You would think that 800+ pages would be daunting but I lost myself in this book and I still found myself craving more. 

9. Siren’s Fury by Mary Weber: With the cruel cliffhanger we were treated with in Storm Siren, I was so eager to see where the plot would take us next. The writing in this series is stunning and I really loved getting to explore more of the world. It was also a lot more romantic than I thought it would be given the circumstances. 

10. Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta: I finished this book last week and my heart is so full of love for these characters. The story is beautifully crafted and there are so many layers to these characters that my heart ached for them. This is a book that will stick with me for life.

    1. I cannot stop thinking about Six of Crows. I just love those character so much and I can’t wait to see what happens in Crooked Kingdom. I would definitely recommend A Darker Shade of Magic to everyone. The way Schwab was able to give each London a distinct atmosphere and personality is amazing. 😀

  4. TBH I haven’t read The Lunar Chronicles! But I know I will get around to it :’) I’ll Meet You There was amazing! 🙂 You should also read Heather’s debut “Something Real” that one is a YA Contemporary too!

    1. As far as fairy-tale retellings go, The Lunar Chronicles takes the crown. I’ve heard a lot of great things about Something Real and I definitely plan on reading it soon.
      My heart is still recovering after reading Jellicoe Road. I love that book so much.
      So many amazing books were released this year and it’s so hard to narrow down the list to 10 haha.

    1. Illuminae takes the crown for the most creative book of the year for me and the plot itself is very interesting. I’d recommend it to anyone looking to read sci-fi. 😀

  10. Oh my goodness. I was scrolling along and I saw Siren’s Fury.That is a beautiful cover! I need to start that series now hehe. I also need to get around to reading Illuminae, it sounds so good and I see it everywhere. Great list!

    1. The cover to the Storm Siren trilogy are stunning and the writing is equally as beautiful. I’ve been recommending Illuminae to everyone I know haha. The book is so creative and unique. It’s definitely a great book for anyone looking to get into sci-fi. 🙂

  11. Very nice list! I LOVED I’ll Meet You There (made my list last year!) and Illuminae and Everything, Everything made mine too! I liked ADSOM a lot, of course, Six of Crows, and I’ll Give You the Sun! I wasn’t as happy with End of Days as I’d hoped to be, but eh, you can’t win them all 😉 Fabulous choices!!

I feel like the epilogue to the End of Days could have benefited from a time jump so we could see how the world recovered itself after the apocalypse and delve in to what happened with the angels after it finished. Basically I’d do anything to get a novella on the watchers, Raffe and Penryn following End of Days haha.

    1. I love End of Days and I do hope that someday we’ll be able to revisit the characters. I just need more Raffe and Penryn in my life haha. I hope you get the chance to read Illuminae and ADSOM soon and that you enjoy them as much as I did. 😀
